Why should we keep on designing ?
My experience of contemporary design is that it has become so superficial. Too much is about making useless trinkets or delicately wrapping bad ideas, with the result that our surroundings become futile through visual pollution. Somehow I feel this reflects the Western culture, our greed and its flattening.
As a designer, professor and producer I frequently question myself why we keep producing more. Is it really necessary? And every time I come up with the same answer; YES! Not to satisfy the commercial aspects but always keeping in mind that mankind deserves better. I am convinced that the best thing a designer can do, is to ensure meaningless products to lose the battle against good and important values.
”There are many very good ideas popping up in this field at different places but few commercial successes in the furniture department… Perhaps furniture design is equivalent of relational aesthetics ”.(Nicolas Bourriand, 1998)
